"Mary" written by Patty Griffin
Performed by The Lower Lights

When I was 17 the album "Flaming Red" came out by songwriter Patty Griffin. My life had already been changed by her voice and songwriting from her debut album, "Living with Ghosts," which was released two years earlier. I can honestly say she is a songwriter that has altered my path, influenced me greatly, and left me with an unattainable desire to write honest aching songs that pull on the heart.
I recorded this song with some of my dearest friends in The Lower Lights one July evening last summer. We had already recorded a handful of tracks for our new record, and I was lucky enough to slip this one in at the end of the night. This is "Mary" with Dustin Christensen (vocals/piano), Paul Jacobsen (pump organ/vocals), Mark Smith (cello), and Tyler Lambourne (bass). I felt emotional every take and considered it a serious honor to sing a song written by my hero. Thank you Catherine Graves for sending me my first Patty album from Austin. It changed my life.

lyrics

Mary you're covered in roses, you're covered in ashes
You're covered in rain
You're covered in babies, you're covered in slashes
You're covered in wilderness, you're covered in stains
You cast aside the sheet, you cast aside the shroud
Of another man, who served the world proud
You greet another son, you lose another one
On some sunny day and always stay, Mary

Jesus says Mother I couldn't stay another day longer
Fly's right by me and leaves a kiss upon her face
While the angels are singin' his praises in a blaze of glory
Mary stays behind and starts cleaning up the place

Mary she moves behind me
She leaves her fingerprints everywhere
Every time the snow drifts, every time the sand shifts
Even when the night lifts, she's always there

Jesus said Mother I couldn't stay another day longer
Fly's right by me and leaves a kiss upon her face
While the angels are singin' his praises in a blaze of glory
Mary stays behind and starts cleaning up the place

Mary you're covered in roses, you're covered in ruin
you're covered in secrets
You're covered in treetops, you're covered in birds
who can sing a million songs without any words
You cast aside the sheets, you cast aside the shroud
of another man, who served the world proud
You greet another son, you lose another one
on some sunny day and always stay
Mary, Mary, Mary
